Microsoft: the Office suite soon available for perpetual purchase, without subscription

From the second half of 2021, Microsoft will offer a perpetual purchase offer for its Office suite. This offer will make it possible to bypass traditional Microsoft 365 subscriptions through a single payment for a definitive unlocking.

A one-time payment to avoid the annual or monthly renewal of your subscription to the Microsoft 365 package. This is in summary Microsoft’s approach. In a blog post, the firm confirmed that it will offer, from the second half of 2021, an offer to unlock the Office suite permanently. “Microsoft Office will also see a new perpetual version for Windows and Mac, in the second half of 2021,” it read.

As 9to5Mac recalls, Microsoft had already tested a single, perpetual payment option with Office 2019 two years ago, but the group was not entirely sure to keep this approach. For individuals, Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365), which includes the Office suite, is currently available through two separate subscriptions: the first at 7 dollars per month in personal plan, the other at 10 dollars monthly in family offer. Annual offers also exist.

A true software package, Microsoft 365 has been promoted for several years by Microsoft as a preferred solution to gain access to a whole host of tools for productivity. Among them, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, but also Exchange, SharePoint, or Skype for Business. As MacRumors notes, some of these tools are free to use online, using a Microsoft account, but cannot be installed on a computer without a Microsoft 365 subscription.

The announcement of a perpetual offer for the Office suite, meanwhile, sounds like good news to many users, as Microsoft had cast doubt on a new subscription-only offering. However, the group remains stingy on details at this time. We therefore still do not know the precise terms of this new perpetual offer for Microsoft Office … as well as its price and its exact launch date.
