Inspired by the success of its trio of Galaxy S10, Samsung launched three versions of its Galaxy S20 in early 2020. Instead of its usual nomenclature, Samsung is opting for Galaxy S20, S20 +, and S20 Ultra this year.
When the Galaxy S20 Comes Out?
The Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy 20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra were launched after an Unpacked event on February 11, 2020. The three smartphones have been commercially available since March 13, 2020.

The screen of Samsung Galaxy S20 Series
Samsung has decided to revise the screen size up from the Galaxy S10. The cheaper S20 variant thus has a screen as imposing as the S10 + released in 2019. Here are the sizes:
- Galaxy S20: 6.2-inch screen
- Galaxy S20 +: 6.7-inch screen
- Galaxy S20 Ultra: 6.9-inch screen
This year, Samsung decided to stand out from the competition by opting for screens with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The 120 Hz screen would be offered on the 3 Galaxy S20. The manufacturer will allow users to easily switch from 60 to 120 Hz via the settings. Samsung will set up three different options to manage the operation of the 120 Hz screen:
- The complete deactivation of the 120 Hz screen (the rate remains at 60 Hz)
- Activate high refresh rate mode and stay at 120 Hz
- Activate high refresh rate mode and automatically switch between 60Hz and 120Hz
The first tests show that the 120 Hz mode has a strong impact on the battery and autonomy.
SoC and RAM
The American Galaxy S20 will be built around Qualcomm’s SoC Snapdragon 865. The models sold on the European market are based on the SoC Exynos 990 developed by Samsung. To support the SoC, the manufacturer integrates up to 16 GB of RAM in its most premium variant, the S20 Ultra. The other variants can count on 12 GB of RAM.
The Battery of Samsung Galaxy S20 Series
On the autonomy side, we have battery capacities between 4000 and 5000 mAh. Samsung is also banking on a fast 45W recharge on premium versions (S20 + and Ultra).

Samsung Galaxy S20 Camera
Samsung has integrated a fivefold photo sensor composed of the main module of 108 Mp to its Galaxy S20 Ultra. This is the ISOCELL Bright HMX designed in partnership with Xiaomi. This sensor offers a definition equivalent to that of a high-end digital SLR camera. The other variants are content with a 64 MP sensor.

On the front, Samsung would bet on a single selfie camera (10 MP) for all models except the Ultra which has a 40 MP sensor. The photo modules of the s20 Ultra had to reach the top places in the DxOMark ranking, even though the crown for the best smartphone in photos went to the Huawei P40 Pro this year.

Since their release, many users have complained about technical problems with the Exynos 990 versions of the smartphone. The problems mainly affect the photo part with erratic Autofocus behavior, performance below what the Snapdragon 865 version offers, and a significantly higher impact on the battery. Problems that have only been partially corrected despite several updates.
Conclusion
Very inspired by the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+, the Galaxy S20 is enhanced by an Infinity-O screen with a hole replaced in the center. The AMOLED panel is encircled by thin borders and a slightly thicker chin. The edges of the three models are curved. On the back, the modules that make up the camera are arranged in a rectangular shape, as is the case for the Huawei P40 in particular.
